L2: Week in France

For lovers of wine and adventure--an amazing holiday for six in “the other south of France”: Make your way to Monte Lauro Vineyards in the undiscovered Languedoc, the Wine Barrel of the world. Your party will spend a week in a 14th century farmhouse (don’t worry, we’ve done a little bit of updating), nestled in the “Hameau” under the 10th century Chateau de Montlaur, Europe’s most extensive un-excavated medieval castle. You could spend a few hours working in the vineyard with the farm manager, spend a day on the castle’s archaeological dig, or lend a hand rebuilding a 500-year-old terraced garden. For a break you can tour hundreds of vineyards from Chateau Neuf du Pape to Bordeaux, visit the beaches of the Mediterranean, stroll through enchanting medieval French villages, and attend antique markets, farmers ’ markets and fl ea markets. Your package includes: two return air tickets from Toronto to Bordeaux, France (which must be booked at least two months in advance), farm house accommodations for six, all on site meals and all the house wine you can drink. The winning bid can take home 12 bottles of wine from Monte Lauro Vineyard tonight.

L4: 6 Bottles of 2007 Sassicaia Bolgheri

95 Points - Antonio Galloni (The Wine Advocate): "The 2007 Sassicaia (Cabernet Sauvignon) explodes onto the palate with masses of rich, opulent fruit that caress the palate with gorgeous length and a seamless beauty that is hard to fully capture. Dark wild cherries, plums, spices, minerals and herbs develop in the glass. This is an especially bold, perhaps slightly uncharacteristic Sassicaia in its extroverted personality, but it is beautiful all the same. The inner perfume and sweetness carries through the long finish, where the sheer weight and glycerol of the fruit leaves a lasting impression."

Nose of berries, cassis and brown spice – expresses crushingly rich, homemade, rustic yet supple characters. Flavors have nuance of ripe Cabernet grapes, cocoa, dark chocolate, vanilla and cassis. The abundant array of fl avors is supported by fine grain “chalky” texture. This vintage exhibits a balance in abundant ripe tannins and serious fruit – grape skin extraction and French oak provides a tasting experience that begins delightful, broadens and expands on the palate – a brooding, supple, finely textured wine.

Although approachable, it is not close to full maturity.”

This is as opulent a Tignanello as I have ever tasted but there is just enough acidity and structure from the Sangiovese to keep things from going over the top.”
